Abstract

In this paper the author discusses the application of integrated land-use and transport models to the Basque Country. As an example, the application of such a model to the Metropolitan Railway of Bilbao is described in detail. The stages of this proposal from development to final approval are outlined. The main characteristics of the metro system, the socioeconomic benefits considered in the model evaluation, and the conclusions of the evaluation exercise are given. General conclusions derived after seventeen years experience of using integrated land-use and transport models in the Basque Country are drawn.
