Objectivity and the Design Process

Abstract

Some of the major implications of the field of philosophical hermeneutics to how we understand design are presented. The author summarises the major challenge to the scientific orientation that imbues much of design thinking. The major tenets of philosophical hermeneutics are explained, in terms of the dissolution of the subjectivity-objectivity distinction, and a case is presented of how this challenges our cherished view of a design as the product of the objective individual.
