America and the Future of the Maghreb

Abstract

In the world today nations are interrelated to a greater and greater extent. There is a trend towards more uni form political, technical, and economic progress. The Arab Maghreb does not escape this trend. The prosperity desired by the peoples of North Africa is in large part dependent on the formation of the Maghreb. The foundations for such a regional group rest on various physical similarities, on neces sity, and on a common will and purpose. Unity will be an ef fective instrument to strengthen the area. The development of economic well-being is also dependent on peace in the envi ronment and international co-operation. But there is neither peace in this area nor the possibility for unified action among independent nations. The revolution in Algeria persists. Peace must first be achieved, for only then will the Maghreb come into real existence and reconstruction begin.—Ed.
