Abstract

The relationship between an alcoholic and his family is a two-way one. The alcoholic affects the personalities of family members and the func tioning of the family as a unit. The family in turn contributes to the allevia tion or persistence of the alcoholism. A description of the family crisis pre cipitated by alcoholism is given. Treatment of alcoholism should include help, not only for the alcoholic but also for the family.
