Abstract

This paper analyses the features of regional growth in Europe during economic integration based on two distinct approaches. The first one investigates the presence of convergence through Barro regressions. The second one assesses regional economic performance by measuring the dynamics of the whole regional income distribution. Empirical results show the persistence of regional income inequalities. The evidence seem to be consistent with the findings of the "new economic geography" literature, as it stands out from a test on the relative importance of access to market as a key determinant of regional income distribution.
