Abstract

Winter biathlon can be considered one of the oldest human activities; it having its origins in hunting on skis, which is lost in the mists of distant history. Ski military units and their actions are reported more frequently early in the second millennium BC in northern regions. As an olympic sport, biathlon has been accepted at the 50th Session of the IOC in Paris, in 1955, following the proposal of the Austrian federation of professional and featured in the program at Squaw Valley in 1960, where for the first time 30 athletes from nine countries were played and the Olympic title in the sample of 20 km. It is replacing the military patrol race demonstration.
