Abstract

The institute of polygamy has a long history and was widespread in all societies, and there were objective reasons for this. Despite the emergence of polygamy in the post-Soviet period in regions whose population professes Islam, there are no studies in modern family sociology that would show the attitude towards polygamy existing in the mass consciousness of the population in general, would characterize the social and emotional well-being of women whose spouses are ready to take a “second wife”, would establish the motivation of the woman herself who is ready for the status of“ second wife ”. The results of the author's sociological survey show the prevalence, with a large preponderance, in the public consciousness of Dagestani women of a negative attitude towards the institution of polygamy, with the argument that emotionally a woman is not ready to accept such an act of her husband. Moreover, empirical data indicate that the women surveyed are ready for certain actions and actions in order to prevent the existence of another family in parallel. At the same time, in the mass consciousness of the respondents, the dominant position is that a woman's unwillingness to come to terms with the decision of her husband to have a “second wife” dominates. The author's hypothesis that the attitude (negative / positive) to the institution of polygamy is influenced by the type of religiosity is not confirmed by empirical material: similarly to other subgroups, subarrays of convinced believers and believers do not accept polygamy, and this indicates a discrepancy between the marriage behavior and attitudes of the interviewed women and the religious position of admissibility polygamy, that is, they self-identify as convinced believers and believers, do not perceive this form of marriage.
