Abstract

The relevance of this article is due to the fact that after ratification of the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Syrian Arab Republic on the deployment of an aviation group of the RF Armed Forces on the territory of the SAR, the role of the Republic of Turkey as a buffer state between Russia and Syria has sharply increased. The history of relations between Russia and Turkey dates back several centuries and contains many tragic pages. This article analyzes two main areas of interaction - geopolitical (the problem of the straits) and energy (the problem of trade in hydrocarbons). An analysis of the accumulated problems and the existing state of affairs led to the conclusion that the relations between the two require a restart on both the diplomatic and the economic front. This article is the first in a series of articles that will discuss the most topical aspects of interaction between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Turkey.
