Abstract

Yerevan’s transportation system has stagnated for years. Due to outdated routes, and poor route planning in general, many vehicles go from one end of the city to the other across the congested city centre, where traffic during peak hours comes to a standstill. The roads are constantly overloaded, and the current transportation system aggravates the problem by packing the streets with minibuses, which, considering their capacity and other parameters, are the least efficient means of transportation. Therefore, it would hardly be an exaggeration to state that public transit in Yerevan is in a chaotic condition. This article reviews the cur-rent situation with Yerevan’s urban transit and discusses the possibilities to improve the situation. Various sections present the current situation and its origins; the challenges facing the transport system, and the possibilities for its development; and officials’ plans to address these problems.
