Abstract

This article aims to study the use of domestic wastewater, resulting from wastewater treatment plant, as a solution for irrigation in agriculture. In this regard, domestic wastewater was passed through an ion exchange process, using an ion exchange resin, with emphasis on removing nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and not only, the wastewater resulting from regeneration process of ion exchange resin, having a possible reuse as irrigation water for plants. Experiments were done on ion exchange resin wich is not currently used for phosphorus removal but barrier filter (scavenger), for the reduction of average molecular weight organic substances, respectively for nitrate removal. For the experiment, a pilot ion exchange columns plant was used, and a comparative study, was performed using two different synthetic solutions, the study being focused on the growth of some plant species, placed in pots and watered regularly. The obtained data showed that the plant growth is significantly improved, in the case of using the wastewater resulting from ion exchange regeneration, and the process can be considered as a solution for irrigation in agriculture.
