Desigualdade e desenvolvimento: revisitando a hipótese de Kuznets após a redução da desigualdade nos municípios brasileiros

Abstract

Considerando a Curva de Kuznets, investigamos a relação entre a renda e a desigualdade de renda nos municípios brasileiros. Para tanto, utilizamos dados de 1991, 2000 e 2010 e estimadores que acomodam o espaçamento desigual entre esses anos. Outras importantes contribuições deste trabalho são: o uso de diversas medidas de desigualdade e a implementação de diferentes especificações econométricas, incluindo o polinômio do quarto grau que é mais flexível do que as formas funcionais usuais. Os resultados iniciais indicam que há uma evidência a favor da Curva de Kuznets para os índices de Gini e L de Theil, mas tal evidência desaparece ao empregarmos o polinômio do quarto grau. Para outras medidas de desigualdade – razões entre a renda dos mais ricos e dos mais pobres –não há evidência a favor da hipótese da Curva de Kuznets. Portanto, de um modo geral, a evidência não é favorável a Curva de Kuznets.
