Abstract

Recently, in 2025, Edward Elgar published the Thematic Encyclopedia of Regional Science. This monumental work, exceeding 800 pages and containing more than 300 entries, features contributions from nearly one hundred researchers worldwide, coordinated by the editors: Peter Nijkamp, Karima Kourtit, Kingsley E. Haynes, and Zeynep Elburz. The editors conceived this work to offer a systematic and thematically structured overview of the main body of knowledge established by the various disciplines encompassed by the somewhat imprecise field we call 'regional science.' In this way, approaches from economic geography, urban and regional economics, sociology, planning and governance, spatial analysis, environmental science, and transportation and accessibility studies are integrated. Furthermore, it incorporates emerging topics such as urban poverty, natural resource management, smart cities and artificial intelligence, making it a resource aligned with the most recent transformations in territorial analysis.
