La explotación del litio en Chile, un mercado incipiente: Una visión de la renta sobre el litio

Abstract

Chile es un país extremadamente rico en recursos naturales: 4.270 km de costas a lo largo de Chile continental, 300.000 km2 de bosque valdiviano, 20.000 km2 exclusivamente en glaciares, 190 millones de toneladas de cobre, a lo cual se suman significativas reservas del tan controversial litio (inicialmente estimadas en 6,9 millones de toneladas). Todo lo anterior, entre muchos otros recursos, conforma en su conjunto, una importante fracción de la composición del PIB chileno. La exploración, explotación y comercialización de estos diversos recursos naturales que Chile posee, han jugado a lo largo de su historia un importantísimo rol económico; donde se han llevado relevantes procesos, ubicando a Chile en el centro del huracán comercial. Por ejemplo, a fines del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX el incipiente mercado del salitre, o el exuberante mercado del cobre que se registra desde comienzos del siglo XX hasta hoy.
