Abstract

This paper tests the role of speculation in determining eleven CIS exchange rates over the period 1995m1-2010:5. This is done by reformulating the ex ante PPP relationship in such a way as to express all variables in levels rather than in first difference showing that, in efficient markets with uncertainty about future prices and exchange rates, the nominal exchange rate is determined not only by current relative prices but also by the expected real exchange rate, and that the omission of the latter makes conventional PPP misspecified. In eight out of eleven cases results of cointegration and coefficient restriction tests are strongly consistent with ex ante PPP against conventional one, implying that the real exchange rate is not mean-reverting over time.
