Abstract

Tourism represents a significant source of foreign currency for Italy. Especially since 1974 receipts from tourism have considerably contributed to balancing or at least, to reducing the Italian balance of payments deficit. Nevertheless, if we consider separately outflows and inflows, we note that the former have maintained a 2-3% level with respect to overall current expenditures while the latter have decreased from 12 to 8% with respect to total revenue. Likewise, if we consider receipts at 1970 prices, we note that these have considerably diminished over the last five years. This is probably a structural trend and it confirms what happens in other industrialized European countries, namely a progressive reduction of the importance of revenue from tourism with respect to total revenue.
