Abstract

This paper has sought to explain the sources of economic growth and structural change in Taiwan and Pakistan in terms of the contribution of demand factors disaggregated into four categories — domestic demand expansion, export expansion, import substitution and technological change. Using time-series data (1962 to 1984) and a model developed to decompose “sources of output growth” from the demand side, it has examined these countries’ economic performance. The results indicate that domestic demand expansion has made significant contribution to output growth and structural change in these countries. They also indicate that export expansion is more important in explaining output growth and structural change in Taiwan than in Pakistan. The other factors have little significance in explaining output growth and structural change.
