Abstract

The paper investigates the dynamics of diversification and multinationality strategies for a sample of firms operating in Italy. The period covered (1987-93) is particularly interesting in that it includes the years of the completion of the Singie European Market Programme. The resuits show that some reorganising/I-estructuring activities in Italian manufacturing bave taken piace, but return to the core strategies bave not been widespread. Conversely, multinational activity has increased for both nationaily controlled firms (which have undertaken new manufacturing activities in foreign markets) and foreign firms (which bave substantially increased their presence in Italy). These and other findings are put into perspective by considering how the changes in the sectoral specialisation of Italian manufacturing relate to the expectations coming from traditional trade theories, new trade and economie geography theories.
