The Effect of Consumption on Happiness: The Case of Çukurova Region

Abstract

It can be said that the economy of happiness which is defined as a sub-dicipline of behavioural economic has recently become an intensive field of study. The happiness economy produces policies that increase happiness of individuals and determines the factors that affect happiness of individual. In this context, happiness economy examines the effects of economic factors, principally on happiness of individuals. In this context the purpose of this study is to examine the effect of consumption factor on the on the happiness of individuals for Çukurova Region. The data used in this study were obtained as a result of interviewed with individuals in the central district of Adana and Mersin. The sample of study consisted of 847 participants who participated in interviews conducted with the help of Oxford Happiness Scale (OHS) survey. In the direction of purpose of the study, for determine the effect of per capita consumption and average consumption on happiness of individuals ordered probit and logit probit methods were used. According to the results of the analyses, it was estimated that there is a negative relationship between average consumption and happiness.
