Law on Communication Technology and Pornographic Items: Nigeria Perspectives

Abstract

Pornography is defined as the act of using materials to initiate, design, expose, circulate, introduce, advertise or promote indecent items, especially material depicting children engaged in sexual acts with adults. The term “pornography” can be used in discussion and debate to refer broadly to material that is sexually designed primarily to produce sexual arousal in viewers, or to material that is sexually harmful to women and children. It is defined in the Black's Law Dictionary, as material (such as writings, photographs, or movies) depicting sexual activity or erotic behavior in a way that is designed to arouse sexual excitement. This article examines the impact of pornography on the children, the youth, the unlawful use of pornographic materials by the adult as well as the Nigerian extant law that regulates this menace that unbalances the social equilibrium that disorganizes the national psyche.
