Abstract

There are few concepts more common or elementary in economics than that of market. And yet, it still gives rise to deep differences of views. In the eyes of some, the market reaches the world as a whole, for others the typical area of a market is that of a free trade zone or a common market. This paper shows that a market area is an empirical question essentially and varies widely depending upon the nature of the commodities involved and the conditions of exchange.
