Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the structure of unemployment in Quebec, in terms of duration, frequency and concentration. The methodology adopted has been developed by Clark and Summers for the United States, and used by Hasan and De Broucker for Canada. The most striking results are: (i) the high concentration of unemployment, that is the high proportion of unemployment caused by relatively few periods of long duration, and (ii) the large extent to which unemployment ends with withdrawals from the labor force rather than with returns to employment. This last phenomenon applies especially to women and young people.
