Efectos locales de la producción de café alternativo y sustentabilidad en Chiapas, México

Abstract

Se estudiaron los efectos locales de la cadena de servicios de la industria del café alternativo en Chiapas, en el marco de la sustentabilidad. Se realizó una comparación entre tres organizaciones de productores que exportan café “orgánico”, “justo” y de “conservación”. Los productores de café fueron interrogados acerca de los cambios que experimentaron en los diez años previos al estudio sobre varios temas de índole productivo y económico (1991-2001) y sus expectativas hacia el futuro. Los resultados sugieren dirigir la atención a las percepciones y expectativas de los productores bajo el esquema de comercio alternativo; pues un punto clave a debatir en esta experiencia es el claro interés por incrementar la producción de café alternativo mediante la expansión de áreas dedicadas a la agricultura. Esta decisión podría resultar en mejorías económicas en el mediano plazo, pero a costa de la utilización de los últimos remanentes del bosque de niebla chiapaneco.
