Abstract

(The lasting value of Hayek’s critique of the weasel-word ‘social’ is the insight that individual virtues of small communities are not able to guarantee structural justice in modern societies. In contrast to Hayek and much of contemporary economic and political theories, we will argue that well-justified normative claims are necessary for the process of shaping society. Asking what the term ‘social’ means in a Social Market Economy is the crucial question of modernity.)
