Chiapas:La independencia y la Revolución que llegaron tarde

Abstract

Este artículo sostiene la singularidad del estado de Chiapas en la historia de México. Su particular posición en la historia política, su pasado colonial vinculado a la Capitanía General de Guatemala y su anexión a México después de la Independencia, así como su notable ausencia en el movimiento de 1910-1920, marcó un particular estilo de relaciones sociales y desarrollo económico que condenó a buena parte de la sociedad, sobre todo a los campesinos e indígenas, a vivir en condiciones de exclusión social, pobreza y explotación, mismas que se hicieron evidentes con el levantamiento armado de Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, en enero de 1994. La carga del tiempo histórico se manifiesta hoy, a pesar de la Independencia, la Revolución y el levantamiento zapatista, en una profunda vulnerabilidad que se expresa en una sociedad rural en crisis, con alarmantes niveles de pobreza y un éxodo creciente a los Estados Unidos.
