Abstract

The aim of this contribution, in retracing his studies during his years in prison, is to show how Ernesto Rossi has been a poorly recognized economist up to now. Perhaps because his figure as a scholar has been obscured by other aspects of his personality or because of his fame as an irreverent "enfant terrible of economics", according to the affectionate definition of Piero Calamandrei, but above all because the most 'academic' part of his career as an economist took place – paradoxically – in prison. His correspondence is thus indispensable for understanding and fully appreciating his figure as a scholar in the landscape of economic thought between the two World Wars.
