Abstract

This study aims to understand how solidarity is formed and maintained among members of the Boy Group Seventeen fan community, Carat Indonesia, on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) despite the anonymity of interactions. It explores the paradox of solidarity emerging without personal identity disclosure, challenging the conventional notion that solidarity is trust-based. Employing a qualitative netnography, purposive sampling was used to recruit six active members for observation and interviews. Findings reveal that anonymity does not hinder trust; instead, members assess each other's track records and interactions to build confidence. Solidarity aligns with Durkheim’s concept of mechanical solidarity, characterized by high collective consciousness, minimal division of labor, and shared interests. Despite conflicts and anonymity, members sustain cohesion through participation in activities such as streaming, voting, and donation campaigns. This study extends Durkheim’s theory to digital contexts, showing how mechanical solidarity operates in contemporary online fan communities.
