The role of the Banda Aceh City Police in addressing vigilantism: An analysis of Article 13 Of Law No. 2 Of 2002 on The Indonesian National Police

Acts of vigilante justice remain a challenge to law enforcement in Banda Aceh, where some members of the public continue to use violence against individuals suspected of committing criminal offenses instead of relying on the formal criminal justice process. Such actions contradict the principles of the rule of law and weaken public confidence in legal institutions. This study aims to analyze the role of the Banda Aceh City Police (Polresta Banda Aceh) in addressing acts of vigilante justice in accordance with Article 13 of Law No. 2 of 2002 concerning the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia and to identify the obstacles encountered in carrying out these responsibilities. This research employs an empirical legal method using a statutory approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, documentation, and the examination of relevant legal materials. The findings indicate that the Banda Aceh City Police perform their duties through anticipatory measures, preventive efforts, and law enforcement actions. These strategies include legal awareness programs, routine patrols, community engagement, security monitoring, and legal action against offenders. However, the effectiveness of these efforts is constrained by difficulties in identifying perpetrators, limited witness cooperation, and insufficient community participation in supporting law enforcement. The study concludes that stronger cooperation among the police, government institutions, community leaders, and the community is essential to enhance legal awareness, strengthen public trust in the criminal justice system, prevent acts of vigilante justice, and support the effective enforcement of the rule of law in Banda Aceh.
