Abstract

[eng] The property of money : theory of interest and doctrine of usury. . Drawing on the writings of thirteenth century theologists and canonists, the purpose of this article is to focus on the main aspects of the theory of interest underlying the prohibition of usury. Thus, it can be shown that approaches to property, goods, and money, quite different from ours, were to generate on the one hand, an original theory of interest excluding the possibility of the latter being acknowledged as the priee for renouncing to liquidity ; on the other hand, a complex cultural device combining descriptive and normative propositions, in such a way that the prohibition of usury can be viewed as a ban not on a economie category but on a certain interpretation of it.
