Abstract

[eng] Soil fertility management and cotton production in southern Chad . The change from shifting to sedentary cultivation is a strong trend in agriculture in the cotton belt in West and Central Africa. A method is proposed for estimating the cost of exhaustion of the soil in relation to the cost of fertilizer. Application of the methodology to the case of Southern Chad shows that in fact one third of the gross margin per hectare is from the exhaustion of the soil ! [fre] Le passage de la culture itinérante à la culture fixée est une tendance lourde de l'agriculture en zone coton- nière d'Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre. Nous proposons une méthode d'approche pour estimer le coût de l'épuisement du sol par rapport au prix de la fumure. L'application de cette méthodologie au cas du Sud-Tchad montre qu'en réalité un tiers de la marge brute à l'hectare provient de l'épuisement du sol !
