Abstract

[eng] The financing of agriculture in the U.K. - The balance sheet of U.K. agriculture has deteriorated markedly since 1979 mainly as a result of falling land prices. By 1986 net worth (farmers's capital) has fallen, in real terms, to 48 % of the 1979 figure. Whilst average liabilities at 18 % of total assets still indicate a robust position as regards financial risks, there is great variation between farms in the degree of financial exposure. An examination of Scottish RICA accounts revealed that 10 % of farms have severe financial problems. The depressed income situation in farming, coupled with its dependence for additional capital on borrowing at high real rates of interest, is creating major financial problems for many farmers. U.K. agriculture faces a continual re-structuring as a consequence.
