Abstract

[eng] In the absence of statistics standardized at Community level — these are now being prepared — the author uses national data to examine trends in stocks of cattle, pigs and sheep in the major administrative districts of the EEC member countries for the period 1954-64 (« 1955 » = averages 1954-56, and « 1963 » = averages 1962-64). This reveals a tendency towards the concentration of breeding of cattle and pigs in the north-west of Europe and of sheep-raising in the southern areas, particularly in France. . The trend was moderate through the ten-year period examined, but it will probably gather momentum in coming years now that a common market in meat and dairy products has been established — a development which will necessitate appropriate measures, notably with regard to structures, to facilitate the trend, and which will also increase the need for Community -level statistics presented in an even more functional way.
