Abstract

[eng] Banking system transformations in Russia. In 1995, Russia has undergone a deep crisis which has paralysed the entire interbank market. The crisis has unveiled many of the problems underlying the Russian banking system. Among these problems, structural defaults are crucial. From a historical point of view, they date back to the soviet period. From a theoretical point of view, they provoke a disfunctioning which cannot be remedied by mere monetary policy adjustments. Analysing the transformations of the Russian banking system, we can see that the current system is run by universal banks and that it is still very unstable at structural level and subject to strong regional differences. These characteristics entail a significant weakness of the banking system in Russia.
