Abstract

[eng] Major accounting issues : intangible elements and pension schemes . Questions related to the booking of intangible assets and pension liabilities are among those which today pose the most doctrinal problems. Intangible assets are a problem of immediate and pressing concern : international standards are going against the lines of methods applied at national level. As regards pension liabilities, it is a relatively new concern, since it is related to the growing importance of pension funds, but still there are many open questions about it. In both cases, the risk incurred is at first a volatility related risk. The intangible aspect of assets, on one hand, and the discounting methods used, on the other hand, bring about some uncertainty as to the accuracy of asset and liability assessment. This will result in a trend reversal risk, leading to major profit fluctuations. This phenomenon is likely to be amplified by the decision made on discounting rates, which could lead to bringing back « wishful accounting », which seemed to have been rejected by referring to the appropriate value based on market values or updated future cash flows. As regards intangible assets, contradictions are currently being solved. But, as far as pension liabilities are concerned, it would be useful to consider such contradictions right now so as to find consensual solutions from now.
