Abstract

[eng] This article questions over the relevance of free banking regime via the functioning of interbank payment systems. We try to put in evidence some of the deficiencies of this competitive monetary regime in comparison with central banking regime. In this perspective, three steps are distinguished. . First, we examine the liquidity need of commercial banks in different interbank payment systems. Second, we present the main features of free banking. In particular, we stress the mechanisms which are supposed to regulate the money supply in the absence of a central bank. Third, we show why some of these mechanisms make problem.
