Abstract

[eng] The purpose of this article is to deal with two aspects of the relationships between the future euro and the dollar. The first dimension has to do with exchange-rate considerations. What will be the main determinants of the dollar-euro exchange rate as of January 1999 ? Must European micro-economic units worry, on an ex-ante basis, about this issue ? . The second aspect relates to the international role of the euro and a new balance within the international monetary system. What could be the reasonable ambitions for the euro ? To be sure, the international role and the exchange rate of a currency are not independent from each other. Nevertheless, for the sake of clarity, the two aspects have to be tackled successively.
