Abstract

[eng] Pricing of banking services : how well is France performing ? . Banks maintain comprehensive and multi-product business relationship with their customers. Their pricing structures enable them to transfer profits from one product to another through a system of cross-subsidization aimed at maximizing customer relationship profitability. An international price comparison of banking services shows that, unlike their foreign counterparts, French banks have developed, under regulatory pressures, cross-subsidies between products, with deposit products and cash management generating most of the profits. Such an approach has multiple adverse effects, as evidenced by the current unprofitability of French banks. In fact, it results in banking profits being very sensitive to falling interest rates and in exacerbated competition on credit products fueling a continuous downward spiral in prices and costs. Within this context, successful institutions are those who depart from this logic and develop differentiation strategies focused on improving customer service.
