Abstract

[eng] The paper focuses on the emergence of new patterns of competitive behaviour in the most relevant section of the international market for telecommunications equipment. A specifie mix of evolutionary factors, relating to changes in technology, demand and regulation, has spurred firms to increase their R&D investments — the accumulation of R&D has increased the importance of process and product innovation as a competitive weapon — and to enlarge their market outlets — the growing complexity of applications induces a higher variety of innovative activity —. Over time, this process has generated some significant asymmetries in the relative positions of companies, thus increasing actual and potential competition in this market.
