  • Cristiano Antonelli

[eng] C. Antonelli - Costs and productivity in the textile firms,as a function of their size. The purpose of this note is to analyse total cost and productivity by size of firm in the Italian cotton and wool industry in the second half of the seventies. The analysis is broken down into the principal elements (e.g. labour costs, financial costs, organization costs) of total cost and productivity functions and shows substantial differences in the various M.E.S. (minimum efficient sizes).. Italian textile firms appear to have no clear incentive to expand into medium-large dimensions from the view point of technical M.E.S. A preferable alternative seems to be one of producing different products with a small-medium technical M.E.S. and a large financial, commercial and managerial M.E.S.
