Abstract

[eng] Pierre Maurel : Strategy of firms towards entry : the case of the chemical industry.. The neo-classical economists have been using the concept of barriers to entry in order to explain the evolution of industrial structures, the market behaviour of existing firms and as a consequence, their performances. However, the barriers to entry have also to be analyzed as a variable in the strategy of the firm, which is trying, various ways to build then up or on the contrary to master (or to avoid) them. In fact, an investigation made into a few sectors of the chemical industry shows that the barriers have not been high enough to hinder entry. This rneans that the analysis of barriers must be completed by the analysis of other factors related to the firm or to the market which influence entry.
