Abstract

[eng] Abstract The League for the recovery of public morality was founded in 1883 by Protestant militants who fought against regulations in matter of prostitution, as did abolitionist societies in Britain or Switzerland. The League wanted to educate people in order to build an enlightened and moral Republic : thus its fight against pornographic writings and images, gambling, alcoholism and slums, although abolitionism was still its main goal. The League kept a political and confessional neutrality but failed to become a mass movement. Despite the quality of its members - they all belonged to an intellectual and social élite —, it remained a marginal organization, based on the activity of a few well- motivated militants, and whose theories were ambiguous: the members of the League were both progressive and opposed to the changing in the morals of their time, that the Conservatives as well as the Democrats disapproved.
