[fre] Résumé Cet article retrace les raisons artistiques et économiques qui ont fait du Royal Italian Opera le principal opéra de Londres au milieu du XIXe siècle et ses liens étroits avec Paris qui ont joué un rôle décisif. En compétition directe avec l'opéra traditionnel, Her Majesty's Theatre, le Royal Italian Opera est devenu un bastion de l'opéra français sous l'égide de son deuxième directeur - et celui qui est resté le plus longtemps en fonction - Frédéric Gye. Grâce à l'acquisition régulière des grands opéras du moment, Gye a été capable de construire un programme concurrentiel qui a assuré à sa maison un certain degré de stabilité financière et artistique et a permis sa survie à long terme. [eng] Abstract This article traces the artistic and economic factors that led to the establishment of the Royal Italian Opera as London's principal opera house during the mid-191'' century, a development that was crucially influenced by the company's close links with Paris. Set up in direct competition to the traditional opera house, Her Majesty's Theatre, the Royal Italian Opera was to become a bastion of French opera under its second and longest- serving manager, Frederick Gye. Through the regular acquisition of current grands operas Gye was able to mount a highly competitive programme which secured his company a certain degree of financial and artistic stability and ensured its long-term survival.
