Abstract

[eng] Abstract An underestimated expression of 19th century culture, the Learned Sociétés were several thousands in number around 1900, with over half a million members in Europe. This paper, after a short account of their history, tries to show, according to an international directory of these sociétés, their geographical distribution through the cities of Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and their scientific specialization in those three countries.
