Abstract

[eng] Abstract Contemporary scholarly literature overwhelmingly recognizes the huge amount of internal migration and movement in traditional rural societies. In France, because the information generally available does not lend itself to such an investigation, the age of people when they move has been hardly studied. This article intends to examine the question of when during their life people moved, by using a census taken during the Revolution in a village in the Vexin. The census asks for both the age of the inhabitant and when they began living in the commune. This study confirms the acknowledged importance of movement at the beginning of adulthood linked to marriage and occupation. It also shows the undeniable fact of older people migrating; especially among those inhabitants belonging to the village elite. The relationships between mobility, time of life, and social position thus appear more complicated than supposed.
