Abstract

[eng] Abstract The central bank of the German Federal Republic, which became the Bundesbank in 1957, has always played a leading role in German foreign economic policy, and so was particularly involved in the post-war process of European construction. This author uses the available archives to analyze the Bundesbank's stance on European monetary cooperation between 1958 and 1973. She shows the limitations that were imposed on the bank by its doctrinal attachment to the stability of the Deutsche Mark, and the indestructible alliance that existed with the United States within the very restrictive context of the cold war.
