Abstract

[eng] Abstract Following pastoral visits, carried out in nine parishes of the Seine between 1864 and 1865 by the abbé Meignan, vicar-general of Paris, the religious situation in the ddiocese appears even more depressed than Canon Boulard thought. Meignan' s abbé conclusions challenge the value of indications concerning Easter Communions given by thee priests. According to his analysis, the rate of communicants scarcely exceeded 5 % for the whole of the diocese. At the same time, he discerns the emergence of a new type of catholic, reticent as regard the sacraments, but continuing to attend the churches occasionally.
