Abstract

[eng] Abstract The data traditionally used as evidences to study the demographic evolution of the population of Toulouse in 17th and 18th centuries are less reliable than it was usually assumed. This new analysis, which reconsiders the old thesis of the stagnation of the population during the early modern period as a proof of the general waning of the town, seeks to open new perspectives about its fate, ft asserts that Toulouse knew an unquestionable demographic growth which began in the first quarter of the 18th century and continued to be significant during the rest of the century. The population of the town grew from 43000 inhabitants in 1645 to 64000 at least in 1790. This growth is bigger than it was expected and it opens new ways for the knowledge of the history of Toulouse.
