Abstract

[eng] Abstract A. Pinard, formerly working with a small private bank, got his nomination as director of the Comptoir d'Escompte de Paris as soon as it was established in 1848. After the Trade Agreement in 1860, he was put in charge for redeploying the activities of his concern towards the financing of overseas ventures. He created branch offices in the Far East and was the founder of the Crédit Foncier Colonial. The latter was to be the crucible of his partnership with L. Bischoffsheim and E. Hentsch, the first representing a Jewish owned german bank and the second a protestant bank in Geneva; the trio then put in place a very important network of banks : Banque de Dépôt et de Crédit des Pays-Bas, Société générale, Banque franco-égyptienne and, after the death of Pinard, Paribas and Banque de l'Indochine. Thus Pinard, a rather unknown man, became a major player in the banking revolution of the Second Empire and a pioneer of financial imperialism.
