Abstract

[eng] Abstract Several recent studies have shown that the effectives of French nobility had considerably decreased during the XVIIth and XVIirh centuries. But the Angevin case proves that this rule must be blended. As a matter of fact, if nobiliary densities diminished in the poorest regions (West and North), they increased, on the contrary, in Saumurois and some territories of Val de Loire. This evolution came with a large renewal of the lineages, which rarely lasted more than a hundred years. The medieval nobility disappeared almost entirely from the XVIIth to the XVIIIth century, but its place was taken by the burgesses of Angers, who where ennobled with municipal charges.
