Abstract

[eng] Abstract For the European chemical industry immediately after World War II, return to the status quo ante bellum was both unthinkable and undesirable. « Reconstruction » was therefore much less pressing than was « new construction » after 1945. The industry required fundamental redefinition in the context of three decisive changes : 1. the end to previous dominance of the germon chemical industry; 2. new technologies and products; and, 3. the new position of the United States. Neither the changes nor the redefinition came to full fruition during the years 1945-1949. Nonetheless, the long-term bases for post-war growth and institutional adjustment in the chemical industry were laid immediately after the War.
