Abstract
[eng] Abstract The directors of the French India Company were obliged to draw up a set of Regulations organising an officers' corps of three hundred men. The reasons for this were the rapid increase in maritime traffic between France and India, the growing complexity of sailing vessels and the example set by the British. The officers' corps was a hierarchy with promotions depending on both the number of voyages and length of service effected. Professional errors that could have given rise to exclusion were rare as recruitment was undertaken within family and regional limits. Two thirds of the officers were form Saint-Malo and its immediate surroundings. They also received solid practical tranning and good wages. An important sense of honour developed amongst this officers' corps. This esprit de corps was supported by the recognition of their valye by the King who accorded them honoury distinctions, in particular letters of nobility.
